Who the Five Directional Wealth Gods Are
In Chinese metaphysics, prosperity is understood to arrive from every direction — not from a single source, but from the four cardinal points and from the centre that binds them. The Five Directional Wealth Gods are the deities who govern those paths.
At the heart of the composition presides Zhao Gong Ming (中路武财神赵公明), the Marshal of the Mystic Altar — the central authority from whom the other four take their command. He governs wealth derived from direct authority, leadership, and command: the pathway that determines whether the sovereignty one holds in an organisation translates into the sovereignty one holds in one’s wealth.
The East stands Xiao Sheng (东路财神招宝天尊萧升), the Treasure-Summoning Celestial Worthy, whose Falling Treasure Golden Coin once drew celestial treasures from the air itself. His is the direction of commerce — of active trade, transactions, and enterprise — the pathway through which deal-making and the front door of business convert into measurable wealth.
The South stands Chen Jiu Gong (南路财神招财使者陈九公), the Wealth-Attracting Envoy, who presides over the relational dimension of prosperity: referrals, introductions, partnerships, and the conversion of trust into revenue. His office is formulated in the classical tradition as 招揽四方财运 — to draw wealth fortune from all four directions, letting the sources converge through the bonds of human connection.
The West stands Cao Bao (西路财神纳珍天尊曹宝), the Treasure-Receiving Celestial Worthy, whose sovereign function 纳珍 — the taking-in and safeguarding of precious things — carries a dual mandate: to receive wealth from sources the individual did not directly solicit, and to ensure that what has entered does not leave. His is the direction of indirect wealth — windfalls, appreciation, and the preservation of what fortune has already delivered.
The North stands Yao Shao Si (北路财神利市仙官姚少司), the Market-Profit Immortal Official, who presides over 利市 (lì shì) — at once the profit of commercial transactions, the fortune of favourable timing, and the celebratory capital of festive occasions. Since the Song dynasty, merchants have pasted his image on their doors flanked by the couplet 招财童子至 / 利市仙官来 — an invocation of daily commercial yield repeated across a thousand years. His is the direction of industry: the pathway that ensures each day’s sustained effort yields its proportionate reward.
Together they are known as the Five Directional Wealth Gods (五路财神) — because they leave no avenue of prosperity unguarded. These pathways do not substitute for one another — commerce without preservation dissipates, authority without relationship isolates, industry without opportunity stagnates. Where a single wealth deity opens one door, the Five Directional Wealth Gods open every door at once.

The Imperial Harvest Fine Jadeite Five Directional Wealth Gods Pendant is carved from a single block of the finest Burmese jadeite — one of the most revered stones in the Chinese metaphysical tradition, valued not only for its rarity but for its capacity to carry and amplify the energetic authority of what is carved within it.

The carving is the work’s defining statement. Each of the five figures is rendered in full relief — layered front to back so that the composition reads as a living court rather than a flat tableau. Zhao Gong Ming’s staff, the folds of each robe, and the distinct expressions of the four directional lieutenants — Xiao Sheng, Chen Jiu Gong, Cao Bao, and Yao Shao Si are all hand-finished with exceptional precision.
The Five Wealth Gods figures do not merely coexist within the composition. They are arranged in their correct celestial hierarchy — Zhao Gong Ming presiding at the centre, his four directional lieutenants — Xiao Sheng, Chen Jiu Gong, Cao Bao, and Yao Shao Si in formation around him, so that the pendant carries not just their images, but the structural authority of their assembly.
Beneath the five figures, the composition is anchored by the Wealth Garnering Treasure Trove (招财进宝) — a treasure trove overflowing with gold ingots, embodying the principle of drawing in wealth and treasures from every direction.
