Two Sacred Days, One Season of Blessing

In Chinese metaphysics, nine is the highest of the yang numbers. On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, that number is doubled, and yang energy reaches its annual peak. This is Chong Yang (重陽), the Double Ninth, and in 2026 it falls on 18th October 2026 (九月初九).

For centuries, Chong Yang has carried two meanings. The first is elevation. Spoken aloud, 九九 sounds like 久久, enduring and everlasting, which is why the day is bound to longevity and to the custom of ascending heights (登高). The second is protection. Classical records tell of the sage Fei Chang Fang (費長房), who warned his disciple Huan Jing (桓景) of a calamity set to strike on the Double Ninth. Huan Jing led his family to high ground, carrying dogwood (茱萸) and drinking chrysanthemum wine. When they returned home that evening, the calamity had struck the place where they would have stood. To rise on Chong Yang is to rise above harm.

Chong Yang is also the day of Supreme Yang, and emperors timed their most sacred rite to it. At Mount Tai, the Feng Shan Ritual (封禪大典) united Heaven, Earth, and Man, and secured the Mandate of Heaven (天命). Emperor Wu of Han and Emperor Qianlong both performed their rites within this window, when vitality stood at its peak and Heaven’s favour could be most powerfully secured. Grand Master David Goh carries this imperial lineage forward, as he did through last year’s Anchor Ritual for Chong Yang Festival.

Ten days later, on 28th October 2026 (九月十九), Guan Yin’s Renunciation Day (觀音出家日) arrives. Of Guan Yin’s three sacred dates, the Birth Day, the Enlightenment Day, and the Renunciation Day, this is the day she chose her path. As Princess Miao Shan (妙善公主), she refused the marriage and the palace her father, King Miao Zhuang (妙莊王), had prepared for her, and left to devote herself to cultivation. It was this same resolve that later led her to offer her own arms and eyes to heal the father who had opposed her, the act from which the Thousand-Hand, Thousand-Eye Guan Yin was born.

The Renunciation Day carries its own energetic signature: release. It is the energy of letting go of what no longer serves, and committing fully to the path that does. Where the Enlightenment Day completed compassion with wisdom, the Renunciation Day gives compassion its direction.

Two sacred days, ten days apart, both within the ninth month. One governs elevation, longevity, and protection from calamity. The other governs release, resolve, and the courage to choose. Together, they express a single principle: to rise, one must first release what holds one down.

Grand Master David Goh Conducts Double Blessings: Chong Yang x Guan Yin’s Renunciation Day (重陽 × 觀音出家日雙祈福法會)

Spanning the season from Chong Yang on 18th October 2026 to Guan Yin’s Renunciation Day on 28th October 2026, Grand Master David Goh will conduct the Double Blessings: Chong Yang x Guan Yin’s Renunciation Day (重陽 × 觀音出家日雙祈福法會). It is a consecration performed under the full authority of his lineage, across the one season of the year when yang energy stands at its peak and Guan Yin’s resolve is most fully present.

This is not two observances placed side by side. The ceremony is calibrated to what each occasion contributes. Chong Yang carries the energy of ascent: elevation in stature and career, longevity in health and in enterprise, and protection from the calamities that strike those who remain on low ground. Guan Yin’s Renunciation Day carries the energy of release: the clearing of what obstructs, the severing of entanglements, and the resolve to commit fully to the path ahead. Every Imperial Harvest treasure brought before the altar this season receives both together.

For professionals and business owners approaching year-end decisions, this is the season to rise to the next level and to release what has held them back from reaching it.

The Sacred Altar

Every consecration Grand Master David Goh performs begins with the altar. Every artefact upon it occupies a specific position, contributes a specific force, and stands in deliberate relationship to every other instrument. Read as a whole, the altar is the complete architecture through which the combined blessings of Chong Yang and Guan Yin’s Renunciation Day are received, held, and transmitted.

The Ceremonial Anchor: Imperial Harvest Red Earth Agarwood Double Dragon Guan Yin

Blog 04.24 The Imperial Harvest Grain Rain Blessing Ritual Red Earth Agarwood Double Dragon Guan Yin

At the centre of the altar, elevated above every other instrument, stands the Imperial Harvest Red Earth Agarwood Double Dragon Guan Yin. This is the ceremonial anchor, the singular artefact through which the ritual’s celestial energies are received, concentrated, and distributed to every treasure brought before it.

Carved from Red Earth Agarwood, a material formed over centuries through the slow accumulation of natural resin, the anchor is built to hold and transmit vast amounts of consecrated energy without dissipating it. Agarwood is the embodiment of Major Yang (太陽), and within the season of Supreme Yang, it holds that energy at its fullest.

Guan Yin stands at its centre, sacred vase (淨瓶) in hand, the vessel from which celestial blessing is dispensed. Twin Imperial dragons flank her on both sides, rising through ascending clouds (平步青雲), each step higher than the last. Few forms could speak more directly to Chong Yang: the dragon is the emblem bound to the number nine, and the ascent through the clouds is the ascent to high ground itself. Their coiled forms trace an unbroken infinity loop around her presence, without beginning or end, and so is the blessing it represents. At the crown, flames rise, the illuminating force that reveals the path forward.

Across this season of Double Blessings, the anchor carries both of its occasions at once. The dragons carry the ascent of the Double Ninth. Guan Yin at their centre carries the resolve of the day she chose her path.

The Ceremonial Artefact: Imperial Harvest Internally Flawless Clear Quartz Supreme Buddha

Blog 05.15 2026 Vesak Day Grand Blessing Ritual Supreme Wealth Buddha

The Imperial Harvest Internally Flawless Clear Quartz Supreme Buddha serves as the ritual’s gateway. It is carved from a single monolithic crystal of internally flawless, unheated clear quartz, a grade so rare that fewer than 0.01% of crystals worldwide meet it. In Imperial Feng Shui, this clarity is vibrational: a beam of consecrated intention entering the crystal does not stop at the surface. It passes through, refracts, and multiplies, emerging amplified and radiated outward.

Behind the Buddha’s head sits the Buddha Light (佛光), a halo rendered through openwork carving (鏤空雕刻) with microscopic precision. As candlelight filters through its cut-outs, the Buddha Light projects shifting patterns of shadow and illumination across the altar. The anchor concentrates celestial blessing; the Supreme Buddha receives it and radiates it forward, amplified through the crystal’s own purity.

Within this season, the Supreme Buddha carries particular resonance. The Buddha’s own path to enlightenment began with a renunciation, a prince leaving his palace behind, just as Princess Miao Shan would leave hers. The Buddha Light is what that choice became: release, made radiant.

The Ceremonial Artefacts: Imperial Harvest Clear Quartz Eight Treasures (八吉祥)

Placed across the altar by Grand Master David Goh personally, the Imperial Harvest Clear Quartz Eight Treasures Ceremonial Artefacts (八吉祥) establish the ritual’s sacred perimeter. The Eight Treasures trace their origin to the moment following Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment, when the gods descended and presented these eight symbols as offerings to the newly awakened one. Each corresponds to a specific aspect of the enlightened form:

Precious Parasol (寶傘): mirroring the Buddha’s Head, for sovereign protection and leadership stature

The Seven Steps of Consecration

Every treasure brought before the altar passes through the same seven-step protocol Grand Master David Goh performs at every Grand Blessing Ritual. Each step builds upon the last, and none can be omitted or reordered.

Step 1: Ignition of the Big Dipper Constellation Candles

Blog 10.09 Double Blessings Chong Yang x Guan Yins Renunciation Day Ritual Image 03

The ceremony begins in stillness. Grand Master David Goh ignites the Big Dipper Constellation Candles, arranged in the pattern of the constellation. Each candle corresponds to one of the seven stars of the Big Dipper, seven celestial officials who govern the domains of human destiny. Within this season, the act carries particular weight: the seven stars align the altar with celestial order at the peak of Supreme Yang, as they did in the Anchor Ritual for Chong Yang Festival. Once lit, the altar shifts from a prepared space to an activated one, and the ritual proceeds under the direct witness of the seven stars.

Step 2: Lighting of the Sacred Incense

Blog 10.09 Double Blessings Chong Yang x Guan Yins Renunciation Day Ritual Image 04

Blog 10.09 Double Blessings Chong Yang x Guan Yins Renunciation Day Ritual Image 05

With the celestial grid activated, Grand Master David Goh lights the sacred incense. Incense is the medium of communication between the human and celestial realms. Its rising smoke carries intention and invocation upward, maintaining an unbroken transmission channel for the ceremony’s full duration.

Step 3: The Opening Prayer

Blog 10.09 Double Blessings Chong Yang x Guan Yins Renunciation Day Ritual Image 06

Grand Master David Goh recites the Opening Prayer, a consecration invocation transmitted through his lineage, opening the energetic portal between the celestial and terrestrial planes. Across this Double Blessing, the invocation addresses the celestial authorities at the peak of the Double Ninth, when yang energy is at its fullest, and Guan Yin at the moment of her renunciation, when her resolve is most fully present. Grand Master David Goh’s authority to open this portal is earned through lineage, through years of practice, and through the personal cultivation that qualifies a master to stand between the realms.

Step 4: Consecration of the Bespoke Talismans

Blog 10.09 Double Blessings Chong Yang x Guan Yins Renunciation Day Ritual Image 08

With the portal open, Grand Master David Goh consecrates the hand-drawn talismans prepared for this ceremony. Each talisman has been individually inscribed beforehand with celestial characters corresponding to its intended purpose. In this step, Grand Master David Goh directs the combined energies of the open portal into each talisman, transforming them into charged instruments carrying the seven stellar officials’ authority, the ascending force of Chong Yang, and the clearing resolve of Guan Yin’s renunciation.

Step 5: Burning of the Talismans

Blog 10.09 Double Blessings Chong Yang x Guan Yins Renunciation Day Ritual Image 09

After consecration, the talismans are burned. In Chinese metaphysical practice, burning a talisman is not destruction. It is transmission. Fire releases the talisman’s consecrated instructions upward through the incense channel and into the celestial realm, confirming that the blessing has been formally registered and ratified above. Within a season defined by release, this step holds a particular resonance: what is offered to the flame is not lost, but carried upward.

Step 6: Blessing of the Chosen Imperial Harvest Treasure

Blog 10.09 Double Blessings Chong Yang x Guan Yins Renunciation Day Ritual Image 013

Blog 10.09 Double Blessings Chong Yang x Guan Yins Renunciation Day Ritual Image 012

This is the culmination of the ceremony’s preparatory steps. Each treasure is placed before the ceremonial anchor, and Grand Master David Goh anoints it with Imperial Harvest ceremonial vermillion, applied by his own hand along the inscription pattern of its bespoke talisman. The combined energies of the open portal, the activated altar, the consecrated talismans, and the celestial endorsement carried through fire converge upon the treasure, calibrated to its intended purpose and to the Four Quadrants configuration of its destined owner. The blessing is calibrated, not generic.

Step 7: The Closing Prayer

Blog 10.09 Double Blessings Chong Yang x Guan Yins Renunciation Day Ritual Image 011

The final step mirrors the third. Grand Master David Goh recites the Closing Prayer, formally closing the portal opened in Step 3, thanking the celestial authorities for their participation and sealing the ritual space. The treasures, now fully consecrated, carry the ceremony’s complete and unbroken energetic imprint.

Grand Master David Goh’s Bespoke Talismans

Two sets of talismans, forty-two instruments in total, each hand-drawn by Grand Master David Goh in the canonical form his lineage has preserved for generations, and each consecrated within the Double Blessings: Chong Yang x Guan Yin’s Renunciation Day (重陽 × 觀音出家日雙祈福法會). Nine engage the Supreme Yang of the Double Ninth. Thirty-three engage Guan Yin in every form she takes.
