The Imperial Harvest Tongan Sandalwood Thirty-Three Guan Yin Ceremonial Anchor is a carving in which all thirty-three manifestations of Guan Yin appear together. A family heirloom handed down to Grand Master David Goh, it has presided over much of Imperial Harvest’s consecration work for many years at his private altar. With the launch of the Thirty-Three Guan Yin Golden Circle, it is unveiled to clients for the first time.
A Family Heirloom, Unveiled for the First Time
Most of Imperial Harvest’s consecration work happens out of public view. For many years, much of it has taken place before a single object: a carving of the Thirty-Three Guan Yin (三十三观音) in Tongan sandalwood, kept at Grand Master David Goh’s private altar at home.
The carving is a family heirloom, handed down to Grand Master David Goh, and its place has always been the altar. It was never made for display. It was made to be present at the rites.
This is the first time Grand Master David Goh has unveiled it. After many years in private, it is now shown to the clients it has served.
What Is a Ceremonial Anchor?
A ceremonial anchor is the sacred image that presides over a consecration. In Imperial Harvest practice, consecration (开光, literally “the opening of light”) is the rite by which each Imperial Harvest Treasure is empowered before it reaches its owner, and Grand Master David Goh presides over every rite.
The anchor is the presence before which that work is done. A ceremonial image usually presents a single deity. In this anchor, all thirty-three manifestations of Guan Yin are present together, so that every form she takes in the Universal Gate Chapter of the Lotus Sutra 《法华经·普门品》 is present at the rite.
All Thirty-Three in One Sacred Image
The anchor is carved as a sacred landscape rising in tiers. Rock faces, pines and cliffs climb towards a central grotto, and across every level the forms of Guan Yin appear: seated in meditation, standing on the lotus, resting by the water, travelling on clouds. A crescent moon and a bird in flight crown the summit.
At the heart of the composition, within a canopied niche, sits a multi-armed Guan Yin with palms joined in prayer, a string of beads in her hands. The whole piece rests on a dark carved base of rolling waves, with the name 三十三观音 set in gold at its centre.
Each figure on the anchor is one of the thirty-three manifestations described in the Universal Gate Chapter, and each is the source of one blessing in the Golden Circle.
The Thirty-Three Guan Yin of the Ceremonial Anchor
The thirty-three manifestations carved on the anchor are presented here in the order of the Golden Circle, from Thousand Hands Guan Yin to Water-Sprinkling Guan Yin. Where an entry says “the sutra”, it refers to the Universal Gate Chapter of the Lotus Sutra 《法华经·普门品》, in which the tradition of the Thirty-Three Guan Yin has its source.
01. Thousand Hands Guan Yin (千手观音)
The Blessing of Boundless Capacity.
A thousand hands to help, and an eye in every palm to see.

10. Fish-Basket Guan Yin (鱼篮观音)

She carries the day’s catch in her basket. Before her, the sutra says, demons and poisonous dragons do not dare to strike.

She rests against a rock by the water, the Guan Yin who lengthens life. Curses and poisons, the sutra says, return to the one who sent them.

20. Anu Guan Yin (阿耨观音)
The Blessing of Multiple Income Streams.
Named for Anavatapta (阿耨达池), the sacred lake from which four great rivers flow. The sutra speaks of her protection for those adrift at sea among dragons and giant fish.

Why Tongan Sandalwood
Tongan sandalwood (Santalum yasi) is among the most prized sandalwoods in the Pacific, and both carvers and ritual masters have reasons to value it.
Carvers value it for its fine, even grain, which holds the smallest detail. A composition of thirty-three figures, each with its own posture, attribute and setting, asks a great deal of the wood, and the anchor shows what the grain allows: individual faces, layered robes and the fine texture of pine and rock.
Ritual masters value it for its fragrance, which endures for decades. Sandalwood has a long place in Buddhist devotion, in incense and in sacred images alike, and a carving that keeps its scent across the years carries that presence into every rite performed before it.
The Anchor and the Golden Circle
The anchor now stands at the centre of the Thirty-Three Guan Yin Golden Circle. For every Qualifying Referral, Grand Master David Goh hand-draws two talismans before the anchor: one for the client who made the introduction, and one for the person they introduced. Each talisman corresponds to one of the thirty-three manifestations carved in the sandalwood, and carries her blessing.
A direct line runs from the sutra, through the heirloom, to the talisman drawn in each client’s name. The same care given to the consecration of any treasure prescribed in consultation is given to every blessing drawn here.
