In the Taoist canon, few sacred instruments carry the authority of the Purple Gold Hulu (太上老君紫金葫芦). It belongs to Tai Shang Lao Jun (太上老君), the Grand Supreme Elderly Lord, the deified founder of Taoism and the embodiment of the Tao itself.
The Purple Gold Hulu is not a passive vessel. It absorbs malefic energy, subdues harmful forces and confines them within its form so they cannot act upon the world. Its two chambers encode its function: the upper chamber draws in, the lower chamber contains and converts.
