Time — The Cycles of Heaven

Time, in Imperial Feng Shui, is not a single dimension. It operates on two scales — macro and micro — each governed by its own celestial logic.

On the macro scale, the key is the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter, which occurs every 20 years. Ancient astrologers identified this as one Feng Shui Period — and defined nine such periods in total, each corresponding to one of the nine stars of the Big Dipper. We are currently in Period 9 — Fire (2024–2043). Every building that was completed in a different period carries a different energetic constitution — one that interacts with the current age in specific, consequential ways.

On the micro scale, time is measured through Jupiter’s 12-year orbit around the Sun. Ancient astrologers observed that Jupiter completes one full revolution around the Sun in approximately 12 years — and from this celestial rhythm, they derived the 12 Earthly Branches (地支): the foundational units of time in Chinese metaphysics.

What makes the 12 Earthly Branches remarkable is their application across two distinct scales of planetary motion. The Earth’s revolution around the Sun — one complete orbit every 12 months — gave rise to the 12 months of the year, each governed by one Earthly Branch. The Earth’s rotation on its own axis — one full turn every 24 hours — gave rise to the 12 two-hour periods (时辰) within each day, dividing the day into 12 equal segments, each again governed by a distinct Earthly Branch.

Revolution and rotation. The orbit of the Earth around the Sun, and the spin of the Earth upon itself. Both mapped through the same 12-unit framework — expressing, at different scales, the same celestial intelligence. Macro time and micro time together give Imperial Home Feng Shui its temporal precision: the ability to understand not only the fixed energetic structure of a space, but how that structure evolves — year by year, cycle by cycle, and even hour by hour.

Direction — The Magnetic Earth

The magnetic compass — one of the Four Great Inventions of ancient China — was not developed for navigation. Its original application was Feng Shui.
